Mary Josephine (Modic) Evanick, 97, Red Barn (Homer City) passed away Friday, August 16, 2019 at St. Andrew’s Village, Indiana, PA.
She was born November 1, 1921 in Homer City, daughter of Joseph and Mary Modic.
Mary attended Indiana State Teacher’s College and worked at Syntron before retiring from Homer-Center School District as a dedicated school board secretary. She was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Croatian Fraternal Union and SNPJ Lodge.
Mary was happiest when she was surrounded by family and friends and loved visiting around her kitchen table with a cup of coffee or glass of iced tea, always with a homemade sweet. She liked to bake, cook and sew. Mary had a love of Slovenian and Croatian music and taught three generations the fun of polka dancing.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 65 years, Frank; her loving sister Marge Radakovich; and five baby siblings.
Mary will be happily remembered by her three children; David of Red Barn; Joe and wife Kathy of Homer City; and Susan and husband Nick Katich of Aliquippa; nine grandchildren, Melissa (Jim) Nolfi, Marena Evanick, JoJo (Ganga) Evanick, Ashley (Steve) Staniscia, Kelsey (Sean) Hankey, Carrie (Chris) Garritano, Emily (Eric) Wodusky, Melanie Fuhr and Allison Fuhr. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren; Jimmy, Ella,Tyler, Izzy, Nellie, Sonny Joe, Hailey, Franklin, Walt, Quinn, Brooks, Mila and Ellie.
The family would like to thank the staff, residents and families of St. Andrew’s Village for the care and friendship extended to their mother during the past 3 1/2 years. A special thank-you to the staff who made the final week as comfortable as possible for Mary and her family including 365 Hospice.
Friends will be received Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the C. Frederick Bowser Funeral Home, Homer City.

A Blessing Service will be held Monday at 9:30 AM at the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Lucernemines Site. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
