Gilbert L. Jones

Gilbert L. Jones, 87, Mentor, OH, formerly of Indiana County, passed away July 9, 2018 at Heartland Manor Care, Willoughby, OH. He was born May 18, 1931 in Furnace Run, Pa. Son of the late Ben and Edna (Hawk) Jones. Gilbert worked as a cement contractor in Cleveland for over 30 years. Gilbert served in the US Army from 1953 to 1954 and was stationed in both the US and Germany. He was an armatureboxer and baseball player who later turned to slow pitch softball and played in many leagues throughout the greater Clevelandarea for many years. An avid baseball fan, he followed his beloved St. Louis Cardinals for over 70 years. Gilbert also coached little league baseball and football for his 3 sons. He loved hunting and golf. Both activities were an integral part of his life. Time spent in Potter County and on several hunting trips to Colorado with family and friends held many terrific memories. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and his daily walk with his Labradors Mandy and Abbey. Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years of marriage Janet F. (Wells) Jones, Mentor, OH. Sons Randy (Karla) Jones, Dublin, OH; Jeffery (Della) Jones, Bradenton, FL; and Stacy (Thuy) Jones, Willoughby, OH. Grandchildren Rachel, Brandon, Mitchell, and Zachary. Great granddaughter Adley. He was the brother of Laverna, Glenavee, Barbara, Larry, Terry, William, Cindy, and Vernon. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers Robert, Wendell, Benjamin, and Roy. Brothers-in-law Leroy, Jim, Kenneth, and Ronald. Sister-in-law Sandra. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the C. Frederick Bowser Funeral Home, Homer City, where funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday. Interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Indiana. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Heartland Hospice 4807 Rockside Rd., Suite 110. Independence, OH 44131. The family would like to give a special thank you to Heartland Manor Care and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care they gave to Gilbert.
