Deacon Norman George Amero

Deacon NORMAN GEORGE AMERO, 77, of Oak Ridge, TN passed away on August 1, 2017 at his home after a three-year battle with cancer. Norman was born on March 22, 1940 in New Haven, CT the only child of the late George William and Mildred Irene (George) Amero. He was the loving husband of Barbara Ann (McNulty) Amero for 56 years. He graduated from West Haven High School then went on to graduate from Northeastern University in Boston, MA with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1963. Norman served on active duty in the US Army as a First Lieutenant stationed in Tacoma Washington from 1964-1966. He served in the US Army Reserves for four years and in the Tennessee State Guard for seven years. He worked in the tire industry for over 50 years at various companies including his own consulting firm with his son James. Norman also served in the US and World Tire and Rim Association for nearly 50 years. He made many friends around the world. Norman received the sacrament of Holy Orders through the Roman Catholic Church on June 9, 2007 after which he served as a Deacon at St. Anns church in Lansing, TN. In addition, he was assigned to prison ministry at Morgan County Correctional Complex in Wartburg, TN providing spiritual guidance to the prisoners. Throughout his life, Norman was involved with many organizations including the Boy Scouts of America in which he received the rank of Eagle Scout as a youth and the Silver Beaver award as an adult; the Knights of Columbus where he served in many capacities including Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator and District Deputy; the Elks; AMVETS; and Junior Achievement. Along with his wife, he is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Amero and his wife Denise of Lakeland, FL and James Amero and his wife Marcia of Oil City, PA; his daughter, Michelle Amero of Oak Ridge, TN and his grandchildren whom he adored, James Amero II and Elizabeth Amero both of Oil City, PA. Norman is also survived by a beloved cousin Starr Rutland, many close friends, and countless young people who he was a wonderful role model for. The family will receive friends Monday, August 7, 2017 from 5 8pm at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge. The funeral will be Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Marys Catholic Church, Oak Ridge. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 9 until time of Blessing Service at 11am at C. Frederick Bowser Funeral Home, Homer City. Interment will follow in the St. Louis Cemetery, Lucernemines. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Knoxville TN Diaconate Program, Divine Mercy Prison Ministry or a charity of your choosing.
